  • Choosing the Right Ironmongery for Fire Doors

Firstly, anything you install onto your fire door needs to be fire-rated to ensure it will not integrity of the door itself, including the hinges, latches, and locks. For peace of mind, we only provide door equipment which has been Certifire approved.

The door must be fit for purpose too, so thankfully, part of our fire door furniture includes items such as door viewers and letterboxes. Of course, fire doors need to close once someone has walked through them, so they should be fitted with door closers which are appropriate for the weight of the door.

Additionally, where ventilation is required for machinery and computing equipment in cupboards, our intumescent fire grille packs are the perfect solution without losing the fire rating.

  • Can I Hold Open Fire Doors?

The biggest sin people make regarding fire doors is to prop them open with a fire extinguisher. Not only is the fire door not able to close in the event of a fire, but the extinguisher is longer in the correct location and is prone to damage. However, you can still hold open fire doors if done correctly.

Our range of UK fire door holders allows you to provide ventilation and ease of access by holding the door in an open position. However, once they hear the fire alarm, they will release and return the door to the closed position.

  • How Do Fire Doors Work?

The material of the door itself is fire-rated, whether that’s for 30 or 60 minutes, and keeps exit routes clear of fire and smoke to give occupants plenty of time to escape. By limiting the spread of the fire too, you reduce the extent of the damage.

Of course, the door isn’t completely sealed with gaps around the edges – otherwise, it wouldn’t open and close in the first place – but with intumescent fire and smoke seals, you solve the problem. Installed around the edges of the door, or the internal edge of the door frame, these seals expand to plug the gap to prevent fire and smoke from passing through. Additionally, with bottom door seals installed, you stop smoke from going under the door too.

When checking the condition of your fire doors, you also need to take a look at the equipment on and around the door and frame. For example, if intumescent fire door seals are damaged or covered in paint, they won’t be effective enough to halt the spread.

  • Do Fire Doors Need Signs?

Signage is key on fire doors, and they should be identified with a blue circle sign which says ‘Fire Door’, as well as providing any other clear instructions that are needed. This way, there is no excuse for people leaving the door open or not knowing what they should do.

  • What are the legal requirements for a fire door?

The Fire Safety Act 2021 clarified that flat entrance doors must be considered in the Fire Risk Assessment mandated by the Fire Safety Order. The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require regular checks to ensure that self-closing devices are working and the fire doors including flat entrance doors are in efficient working order and in good repair. These checks are to ensure that the existing door standard is maintained. Read more here on fire door guidance.
